Twelve Palestines
“Twelve Palestines” delves into the unresolved issue of all Israeli-Palestinian negotiations past, present and future: the status of Palestinian refugees exiled to neighbouring countries. Approximately 450,000 live in the 12 official camps of Lebanon. They are denied return to present-day Israel and unwelcome by the Lebanese government, which maintains that their presence is temporary. Of all the Middle Eastern countries hosting Palestinian refugees, Lebanon is named worst by the UN when it comes to their rights. As a result, its 12 Palestinian camps have become “states within a state”, each charged with maintaining their own education, military and political structures. Hence the title, “Twelve Palestines”.
In this film, we profile residents of the two largest camps: Nahr el Bared, the most affluent and business-minded and Ain el Helweh, the most dangerous and militarized camp.
